Let's Hear it For the Authors

Visit W4Ws on Facebook!
I was humming that little ditty from Footloose, the original one, when I typed this blog title. You have to improvise a bit to work "authors" into the one syllable spot. When I was in college, the movie came out, the one with Kevin Bacon as rebellious boy Ren MacCormack. It was my sophomore year and I was an RA (Resident Assistant). I attended a Christian college which, at the time, had a "no on-campus dancing policy". No problem; we organized off-campus "rhythmic activities" at the local armory and got our groove on there.

When Footloose came out, it was like our battle cry: there ain't nothin' wrong with dances (if you don't include the fact that I've always had what I consider a rhythmic movement impairment, ie I can't dance). As an RA, I organized a floor activity-- after all that was in my job description-- centered around the Footloose movie. I blared the music from a boombox (quit laughing), served ice cream and we, um, may have participated in some movement that resembled dancing. Maybe.

But on to my real topic Let's Hear It For The Authors!

That's right, today is Writers 4 Writers! Today's features are:

Kyra Lennon with her fantastic book with oh-so-steamy cover:

And Angela Brown and this incredibly intriguing book and cover:

Keep writing (and humming!)

Julie

PS And in case you need to hear the original Deniece Williams tune now and do a little early morning, 80's groovin' (I know I'm doing a little chair dancing right now...)

  1. LOL, I love that song! Thanks so much for your support!

  2. Wow! I'm surprised to hear there was a no dancing policy. While I grew up on the Soundtrack (who didn't?) I didn't see the original footloose until college. I always thought the premise--outlawing dance and music--was a bit hokey, even if it was a pretty classic show. Guess it came from somewhere. Great post, Julie! Very original! :D

    1. Christian colleges often have funky, counter-societal rules. I'm not entirely sure why this rule existed but it was in keeping with the denomination it was associated with. In my case, it was just common sense and protection against severe mocking. I can't dance. My children have since taken up the cause and enforced the "no Mom dancing" policy. ;)

  3. Congrats to Kyra and Angela!

I watched the movie several times in the theater. *ahem*

You are not alone in the dancing ban. Like Raj from The Big Bang Theory, unless copious amounts of alcohol is involved, I don't dance. Just because I brought an entire floor full of people to the ... well ... floor during the Cotton Eyed Joe.

    1. OK that's it. Next time you come to Colorado, we're finding some place to dance and sing karaoke. I can see it now...we'll clear the joint LOL.

Boy, you saw it in the theater? Gee, just how old are you? (Still A D O R E me?)

    4. You're both such sad cases. I know I'm 10 yrs older than Julie but I can dance, baby.
      Karaoke is a different matter...

    6. With a deviated septum, I have a knack for dancing...there's always a little boogie somewhere in there that gets to jiggling.

    1. Yes-- so nice to see these incredible authors highlighted! Here's to their success!

And I'm seeing a singing, dancing girls' vacation in the future (better be a lot of margaritas too).

  5. Oh no, I'll be singing this song for the rest of the day now. Although that's not really a bad thing! I remember when I first saw this I was wishing it was really this easy to learn to dance LOL. I have two left feet and I don't think I'd pick it up as quickly as Ren's friend did. :D

    W4Ws is such a great project. :)

    1. Oh you and me both, Julie. I love to dance but look entirely stupid doing it.

And yes, W4Ws is one of the few bandwagons I jump on. I love supporting other authors!

    1. Katie, my daughter and I watched the new Footloose, then I made her watch the original. She said, "ohhh that explains why you dance the way you do." LOL

  12. Hmm, I grew up in a "NO dancing" denomination too and missed the normal season of learning how to move to music in a way that doesn't cause snickers from others. At my sons wedding, Hubs and I dance together for the first time, it was wonderful, but how sad is that? Oh well, time to make up for it huh?

  15. Julie,

Billy Crystal is going to be jealous of my comment. Footloose is a much better movie than any of the ones Billy ever made.

    1. You think? Not sure I agree with that, although I think Footloose is a fun movie. Besides, none of Billy's movies fit for the cheering on of Kyra and Angela!

    1. Oh Stina, pop the popcorn and watch it. My daughter and I had fun watching the new remake and then the old one. It was fun to compare eras with the same movie. She didn't think Kevin made a very cute Ren, though.

And yes, the REAL reason for this post-- congrats to the authors!

  19. These authors with their steamy covers...and there are words inside, too. Congrats to the ladies and what a wonderful post to spotlight them!

Just now getting around to all my visiting. A day in bed. Hopefully. We'll see what happens!

  20. I was an RA too. Great way to cut the college costs and have a lot of fun. I once did a floor program that almost got me fired, sounds like you did too!

I still have to do my W4W thing.

    1. Let's hear it for RAs! I was a peer advisor too. Actually those two experiences led me to get my MA in higher ed and my career in colleges for over 20 years.

I really like the W4Ws idea.
